The Book of Joel

First Things First - Open in Prayer

Ice Breaker Activity: The football season is upon us. Share with the group your favorite high school, college or NFL team and why. Is there any family history or relationships that influence you’re being a fan of a certain team? If so, share.

Read aloud Joel 1:2-3 and Deuteronomy 6:4-9. See any similarities? Draw any conclusions? What responsibility do we have to the next generation? How well are we doing?

Read silently Joel 1:2-12. Discuss the state of affairs in the land. Notice the opening word(s) of Joel 1:5 "wake up.” Do we need to “wake up” today? If so, how?

Read aloud Joel 1:13-14 & 2:15-17. Have you ever been a part of a community/church/corporate fast and/or a solemn assembly? Those who have, please share your experience.

Read aloud Joel 2:13. In the ancient Middle East, individuals would tear/shake out their clothes in utter disgust, see Acts 14:14 and Acts 18:6. Focus on the phrase “rend your heart not our garment.”

What might this mean and how might it appropriately be done? See Psalm 51:17.

Read aloud Joel 2:28-32. Now read aloud Acts 2:14-21, 37-41.

Discuss how the Joel prophecy was fulfilled. Are you grateful?

Joel 3:17-21 closes the book with the blessings of God. Before closing in prayer share some blessings for which you are truly grateful.

Close your time in prayer.
